When Iris rounded the corner to descend the final flight of stairs, they started singing. Happy birthday to you… It reminded her of her last birthday, and she could hardly bear it. But she commanded herself to smile. To wear the silly paper crown Lydia had laid out on the table. It was expected of her.

“You’re queen for the day, Iris.” Lydia placed a handmade card next to her plate. You are a blessing, it read. “This is from me and Seth.”

With ceremony, Seth laid a napkin on her lap. “And the pancakes are courtesy of Dottie’s Café, since you know Lydia’s cooking could kill a horse. Sorry, Liddy.”

“Whatever you wish today is our command.”

Iris’s true wish couldn’t be granted. No one could bring back the dead. Not even Seth with his angelic smile. So, she would have to settle. “I’d like to take a stroll in the Presidio. Or maybe over to Lafayette Park. And if it’s not too much trouble, Seth, could I help you with the gardening? It’s been so long since I felt the dirt between my fingers.”

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea. With the cast and—”

Lydia cleared her throat, gave Seth a pointed look.

“But I’m sure we can make it work.”

“Is that really all you want?” Lydia asked, squeezing Iris’s shoulder. “What about some more of those cute little dish towels we found on our walk yesterday? Or a girls’ night out at the movies?”

Iris patted her hand. “Your company is the best gift an old woman could ask for.”

“If you say so.”

“I do say so. But I am a little chilly, dear. Would you mind getting my sweater?”

The moment Lydia’s footfalls landed heavy on the stairs, Iris turned to Seth. Uncertain how he’d react, she hesitated. She didn’t want to scare him. “There is one more thing. If you can keep a secret.”

Seth dipped his head in a mock bow. “Name it, my lady.”
